CHICAGO — Two artists, Tony Fitzpatrick and Danny Torres, were standing in the lobby of a new building on LaSalle Street, across from a building that was once Gino’s East, now shuttered, and before that was Michael Jordan’s restaurant and long before that was a place named Ireland’s.

The city is an organic thing, ever transforming, and this new building, at 448 N. LaSalle St., is a fine and encouraging example of the new. Twelve stories of glass and steel and striking from the outside, it recalls the work of the great architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and a sign near its entrance announces “The Office of Tomorrow is Coming Here.”

Wayne Rooney has resigned as Derby manager after 18 months in charge and on the same day the club appeared to have sorted out its financial difficulties. The Manchester United and England star joined the team in January 2020 as player-coach and ended that year in temporary charge following Phillip Cocu’s departure. Rooney retired as a player when named Derby’s permanent boss in January 2021. County moved into administration at the start of last season and the team has been relegated from the Championship. It came despite the 36-year-old Rooney attempting to prevent the drop following a combined 21-point deduction due to a breach of accounting rules and its administration problems.

Shares of Carnival Corp. have surged after it reported higher revenue, occupancy levels on its cruise ships, and bookings for future trips. But the cruise line operator is still losing money. Carnival said Friday that it lost $1.83 billion in the second quarter and expects another loss in the third quarter because of effects from the pandemic and higher fuel prices. Carnival operates nine cruise brands. It says 91% of its fleet is sailing again. Bookings in the second quarter nearly doubled from the first quarter, and they were the strongest since the beginning of the pandemic.

PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday overturning Roe v. Wade thrust the races for the governor and state legislature in Pennsylvania into the spotlight as both parties gear up for a midterm campaign that will decide the fate of abortion access in the state.

Chicago Police say Bears linebacker Matt Adams was arrested and charged with misdemeanor firearm possession. Police say they recovered a weapon during a search of his vehicle in downtown Chicago on Thursday evening. He was also cited for possessing a high-capacity magazine within the city limits and metal-piercing bullets, a municipal code violation. Adams has a court date scheduled for Aug. 24. The Bears say they were made aware of the arrest Friday morning and are “gathering more information.” Adams signed with Chicago in April after spending his first four seasons in Indianapolis and followed new coach Matt Eberflus to the Bears. Eberflus spent the past four seasons as the Colts’ defensive coordinator.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday that immediately protects abortion providers in California from liability when caring for patients traveling from areas where the procedure is now banned or access is narrowed.

The Memphis Grizzlies announced Friday the final pieces of their draft night trade sending guard De’Anthony Melton to the Philadelphia 76ers for the draft rights to forward David Roddy and wing Danny Green. Roddy was selected with the No. 23 overall pick Thursday night. The Mountain West Player of the Year led Colorado State to the NCAA Tournament this season for the first time since 2013. Green is a three-time NBA champ with the Spurs (2014), the Raptors (2019) and the Lakers (2020). Melton has spent the past three seasons with the Grizzlies.

Donors have pledged about $160 million for the U.N. agency helping Palestinian refugees. But its chief said Friday it still needs over $100 million to support education for more than half a million children and provide primary health care for close to 2 million people and emergency cash assistance to the poorest refugees. Philippe Lazzarini said the pledges when turned into cash will enable the U.N. Relief and Works Agency to run its operations through September, but “I do not know if we will get the necessary cash to allow us to pay the salaries after the month of September.”

Two of four women who testified that Ghislaine Maxwell played a role in their sexual abuse at the hands of financier Jeffrey Epstein may be speaking at her sentencing or have their statements read aloud. Prosecutors told a federal judge in a letter Friday that two of six women who either testified or were mentioned during a December trial plan to attend the Tuesday sentencing of the 60-year-old British socialite. Maxwell’s lawyer says in a separate submission to the judge that the hearing “should not a bully pulpit for anyone who was not identified as a victim."

New York Mets right-hander Max Scherzer will not be activated from the injured list and start the final game of the club’s series against the Marlins in Miami on Sunday. Manager Buck Showalter confirmed Scherzer's status before the series opener Friday. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has been sidelined since May 19 because of an oblique strain. The 37-year-old, who signed a three-year $130 million free agent deal with the Mets in the offseason, was 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts before being hurt. Showalter said Scherzer is making progress  but is not ready yet.

A former Argentine navy officer goes on trial Monday in Miami for his alleged role in a 1972 massacre of political prisoners in his homeland. Roberto Guillermo Bravo has lived in the United States for decades and is the only former Argentine military officer accused of taking part in what is known as the Trelew Massacre who has yet to face justice. Bravo and other officers were accused of shooting to death 16 unarmed political prisoners and seriously wounding three others. He will be undergoing a civil trial brought by relatives of four of the victims under a U.S. law that allows judicial action against U.S. residents for acts allegedly committed elsewhere. Bravo's lawyers contend the deaths occurred during a shootout between the officers and escaping prisoners.

The fate of hard-nosed technology executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani is now in the hands of a jury that will weigh criminal charges alleging he joined disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, his former partner, in an elaborate fraud that jarred Silicon Valley. Jury members finally get their chance to pore over the evidence submitted during a three-month trial after federal prosecutors on Friday finished a rebuttal to more than 11 hours of closing arguments methodically laid out by a lawyer defending Balwani. A separate jury spent seven days deliberating before convicting Holmes on four counts of investor fraud and conspiracy earlier this year.

Only the Americans and Australians had claimed more ahead of the final day of racing at Duna Arena on Saturday. Canadian swimmer Josh Liendo says the team is building momentum and looking forward to next year and then the Olympics. Canadian success in the pool is not a lucky accident. Swimming Canada's high-performance director John Atkinson says the key is identifying the right targets – and patience.

A decision regarding discipline for Deshaun Watson is still expected before training camp, though the league has yet to conclude its investigation and turn it over to a disciplinary officer, according to two people with knowledge of the case. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Friday because the investigation is ongoing. The Cleveland Browns open training camp on July 22 for rookies with veterans due on July 26. Once the NFL completes its investigation, former U.S. District Judge Sue Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the players’ union, will review the findings to decide whether Watson violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy and whether to impose discipline.

While South Carolina is not one of the 13 states with “trigger laws” banning abortion after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn federal protections, lawmakers in the Republican-controlled state are ready to further restrict the procedure. Shortly after the high court's ruling came down Friday, Gov. Henry McMaster said he would immediately work with the state legislature to find "the best solution for protecting the lives of unborn South Carolinians.” A federal appeals court in February blocked the law signed by McMaster last year that banned most abortions after six weeks. The state attorney general's office asked the appeals court to lift its injunction Friday.

Evidence in the corruption trial of State Auditor Kathy McGuiness suggests that McGuiness expected an employee to handle a controversial contractor payment that is at the heart of the criminal case. But the defense said Friday that McGuiness had no way of knowing the employee tasked with handling such payments wouldn't be available. That's because she decided to quit while on vacation. McGuiness is being tried on felony counts of theft and witness intimidation, and other misdemeanor charges. Prosecutors allege, among other things, that McGuiness orchestrated the no-bid contract in question then deliberately kept the contract payments under $5,000 to avoid having to get them approved by the Division of Accounting.

U.S. national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe is among a group of leading sports figures who have expressed anger over the Supreme Court’s decision to strip the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion, decrying an erosion of rights that women have had for a generation. Billie Jean King, who just celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX, is also dismayed by the decision. Women playing for teams, including NWSL's Racing Louisville and the WNBA's Dallas Wings, will be directly impacted by the decision.

A woman mountain climber in Mexico is dead and a climbing companion was injured when they scaled the highly active, off-limits peak of the Popocatepetl volcano. Mexico's volunteer Mountain Rescue and Assistance Brigade confirmed that the climbers fell into a gully about 1,000 feet (300 meters) from the volcano's crater, suggesting they had reached the crater or near it. The crater has been belching ash and incandescent rock for years. Civil defense authorities have strictly prohibited climbers from going within 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) of the peak. The mayor of the nearby town of Ozumba identified the dead woman as a 22-year-old resident of the town.

The FBI raided a Florida art museum on Friday and seized more than two dozen paintings attributed to artist Jean-Michel Basquiat following questions about their authenticity. Orlando Museum of Art spokeswoman Emilia Bourmas-Fry says they were complying with a warrant from the FBI for access to the ‘Heroes and Monsters’ exhibit, which is now in the government’s possession. She added that no one on the museum’s staff has been arrested. According to a search warrant, federal art crimes investigators have been looking into the 25 paintings since shortly after their discovery in 2012. The controversy gained more attention shortly after the Orlando exhibit opened in February.

The Tennessee attorney general’s office has filed an emergency motion asking a federal appeals court to let the state immediately begin banning abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The state also has a trigger law that was written to ban nearly all abortions if Roe v. Wade was overturned. That ban cannot take effect until 30 days after Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling. But the six-week ban could be implemented as early as next week, if the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agrees to lift a court injunction. Planned Parenthood officials say they plan to keep providing abortions for now.

Nebraska could be headed to a special session to try to ban abortions now that the U.S. Supreme Court has given states that power, but it’s unclear whether one will actually happen or what type of restrictions might win enough support to pass. Gov. Pete Ricketts says he would work with Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers to try to find a way to ban abortions, but hasn't yet committed to a special session. Ricketts, a conservative Republican who vehemently opposes abortion, praised the ruling as “a victory for the people” and has said he would support a special session to outlaw the procedure in Nebraska.
