RoboCop: Rogue City lets gamers get into the mechanical mind of Alex Murphy, taking on the rampant crime wave in a futuristic first-person shooter.

Known for defending the city of Detroit, RoboCop is finally back to defend the world of video games. RoboCop: Rogue City puts players behind the gun and visor of the man once known as Alex Murphy, and it's bringing the action to a fittingly grim locale. Continuing the old movies' story, the game promises to be the spiritual successor that the original movie never got.

Hoping to capture the feeling of the classic series like never before, Rogue City is definitely the cyberpunk game that audiences have been waiting for. Though it's still a bit away, what's been shown so far will have gamers waiting for less than 20 seconds to comply -- and buy. Here's what we know so far about the dystopian first-person shooter.

RoboCop: Rogue City's first trailer was shown at the Nacon Direct, about a year after the game was intially announced. It follows a trend of action games based off '80s action movies being developed by Teyon, as the company was also behind both Terminator: Resistance and Rambo: The Video Game, the former of which was very well received. The first glimpse of the game is what fans expected and then some. Showcasing the franchise's gritty, futuristic Detroit besieged by crime, and the game's visuals capture the cyberpunk aesthetic perhaps even better than Cyberpunk 2077. Crooks run rampant in the streets, with hostage situations and homicide being the rule of the day. Thankfully for the everyday citizens of Detroit, law enforcement has received an upgrade.

The trailer's mid-section brings RoboCop himself into the fray, armed with his trusty Auto-9 gun. His voice is provided by none other than Peter Weller, who portrayed the character in the original Robocop movies. Basic gunplay is also shown, with RoboCop using his hi-tech tracking system to fire away at enemies afar. Enemies include the ED-209, the chief villain from the second RoboCop movie. So far, it's assumed that the game will be a single-player experience, with anything else about the gameplay being up for debate.

This isn't the only continuity with the films, as the game is set after the events of RoboCop 3. Not much has been said about the plot, but it seems to involve RoboCop going rogue and turning against the public. This is furthered by a line of dialogue said in the trailer, though this may have been directed toward the villainous ED-209.

The official synopsis reads, "Welcome to Detroit; crime runs rampant as the city lies on the edge of ruin, people fighting for scraps as others live extravagant lives of luxury. Control of the Detroit Police Department is given to the Omni Consumer Products corporation in an attempt to restore order. You are that solution, RoboCop, a cyborg tasked with protecting the city."

RoboCop: Rogue City doesn't come out until June 2023, and it will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows and even Nintendo Switch. The fact that the Nintendo console can handle the rather graphically intensive game says a lot, though it might be that the gameplay revealed so far was merely preliminary mock-up footage, with the end result not being quite so advanced. Gamers will find out for themselves when RoboCop: Rogue City drops next summer.
