Malden Valley Forum > Directions The Malden Valley Forum at 50 Holden Street in Malden is the home rink of the Tufts hockey team. The Forum opened its doors in November 2001 and immediately became home to the Jumbos. It became the team's first permanent home rink. The Jumbos defeated Connecticut College 5-4 in their first game at the rink on November 30, 2001. The arena features a 200-by-85-foot state of the art ice rink with seating for 500 people. A full service pro shop and concession stand are also at the site. A lobby with a seating area looking out to the ice rink includes arcade games, vending machines and a television. In February 2009, Tufts dedicated its new locker room at the rink in honor of Ben Sands, who attended Tufts and played as a defenseman on the hockey team until graduating in 1954. After the hockey program was dropped as a varsity sport in 1960, Sands was instrumental in bringing the team back to campus. He helped initiate a club team in the early 1980s and was a force behind the team regaining varsity status in 1986. After coaching the club team, he remained as coach of the varsity squad for six seasons and compiled a 73-63-4 record. His teams qualified for the ECAC playoffs in 1988, 1989 and 1991. He was ECAC Division III Coach of the Year in 1987-88. Sands was the recipient of Tufts Athletics' first Brown and Blue Award in 2018 for his contributions to Athletics. With funds raised by the Friends of Tufts Hockey, the locker room was revamped out of an old office at the rink. It includes 30 oak stalls, showers and plasma televisions for video work, among other accoutrements. The team has sole access to it year-round.
